The evocative tango is a truly global art form derived from the Cuban Habanera with Argentinian and Uruguayan music and dance influences, originating from the African community in Buenos Aires and also possessing European musical influences. Picosa’s program explores the many voices of tango with works by Uruguyan composer Miguel Del Aguila, Guatemalan composer Xavier Beteta, Brazilian American composer Clarice Assad, Cuban American composers Paquito D’Rivera and Tania León. American composer American composer David Lang’s minimalist Sweet Air provides a minimalist interlude in the program with slight evocations of tango rhythm.
